Panel mounted transponders are designed to be easily removed. If the information below isn't helpful you may need to consult your mechanic.
Most transponders may be removed using only a 5/64 or 3/32 allen wrench, or a 1/8" standard screwdriver. Bring your toolbox and a flashlight 'just in case'. Removal should take about one minute.
Locate the release hole located on the front panel,
COMMON TRANSPONDER RELEASE TOOLS
usually below the five knobs and
towards the middle.
Gently insert the allen wrench into the release hole
and engage. Rotate the allen
counterclockwise about
5 turns until it free-wheels. The unit will slide
towards you about 3/8".
Grab onto the sides of the unit and pull it toward you.
Do not pull by
the knobs or they may break.
Re-installation is the reverse of the above process.
TRANSPONDER NOT COMING OUT OF TRAY?
Do not attempt to pull by the knobs. The unit is held
in by a locking cam that rotates as you rotate
your tool. Make sure you are turning the allen wrench counter clockwise.
If the unit does not come toward you, than either: 1. The allen
has not engaged. 2. The cam is still locked
against the jam or it is freewheeling or 3. It may be held in by friction or
jammed against another radio.
Remove both the radios above and below the transponder so
you can get a good look at the problem.
Grab both sides of the unit and rock side to side while gently pulling.
Use a screwdriver to gently pry at each corner. If you use too much force you could crack the plastic.
As a last ditch effort you may insert a screwdriver just under the plastic faceplate between the body of the transponder and the tray holding it. Do not pry as you might crack the faceplate. Force the bottom of the tray down until the locking cam is free of its jam. You may bend the bottom of the tray a little, but you can bend it back later.
If you notice any damage to the locking cam please note it on the service request so we can repair it for you.
